MAA Supports AWS Conference at UVA
The MAA's Student Initiative Fund helped bring the Association of Women Surgeons Regional Conference to Charlottesville in November
The UVA Medical Alumni Association was pleased to support the recent Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) Southeast Regional Conference at UVA through our Student Initiative Fund.
The AWS Southeast Regional Conference took place on November 9 at UVA. The event was attended by both UVA medical students and guests from regional schools. Conference attendees heard presentations from groundbreaking female physicians, including Drs. Nora Kern, Amanda Silva, Adanna Akujuo, Margaret Tracci, and Kacy Peek, as well as keynote speaker Dr. Martha Zeiger. Other activities included panels with both attending and resident physicians that focused on the unique experiences of women in surgical specialties and a leadership workshop, where attendees learned about their own leadership styles and how they can leverage their styles with others’ to achieve success and accomplish their goals. The conference also included a poster presentation where attendees were invited to showcase and present their research projects to judges and other attendees.
One student said of the experience, “We had a wonderful time getting to know our fellow students and drawing inspiration from powerful female surgeon role models. This would not have been possible without the generous support of the UVA Medical Alumni Association.”
