Class of 2012 John Edward Jones Memorial Award

This scholarship award recognizes outstanding medical students entering their third year of medical school who have demonstrated leadership efforts to eliminate health care inequalities and to address the educational, health care and societal needs of minorities in the U.S. This award was established by the members of the University of Virginia Medical School Class of 2012 in memory of their classmate, John Edward Jones, who tragically died during his second year of medical school.

The award recipient will receive $1000 during the transition week bridge to the clinical clerkships at the UVA School of Medicine.

To be eligible, the applicant must be:

• Committed to exemplifying a healthy work/life balance
• A second year MD student at the UVA School of Medicine, including MD dual-degree programs.

The application process:

Any second year student in the UVA School of Medicine’s MD or dual MD program may apply or be nominated. The nomination must include BOTH of the following documents to be eligible:

• A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or peer with first-hand experience with the nominee’s leadership efforts;
• A personal statement written by the nominee, which does not exceed 400 words, assessing their leadership efforts in eliminating inequities in medical education and health care for minorities.
