The annual UVA Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) Lab Coat Ceremony took place on April 1. This event, co-sponsored by the UVA Medical Alumni Association (MAA), marks the students’ transition to the next phase of their graduate careers when they begin their mentored research projects.

The event took place in McLeod Auditorium and was attended by students, family, friends, faculty, and staff. During the ceremony, each student received a personally embroidered lab coat as a gift from the MAA. To highlight the critical role of mentorship, faculty mentors coated their students.

A total of 77 students participated in the ceremony, representing the following disciplines: Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (8), Biophysics (10), Cell Biology (3), Computational Biology (3), Experimental Pathology (8), Microbiology (20), Neuroscience (16), Pharmacology (2), and Physiology (7). Additionally, an Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) student was recognized who has chosen to train in the Biomedical Engineering PhD program.

Speakers included School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe, MD; Janet V. Cross, PhD, associate dean for graduate and medical scientist programs; Barry Collins, associate dean for medical alumni affairs and executive director of the MAA; and Mark Beenhakker, PhD, associate professor of pharmacology and director of graduate studies for the neuroscience graduate program.

Congratulations to all of these BIMS graduate students!
